_

At Brigham and Women's Hospital, all Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) research projects share the same goal: better understanding of the special needs of babies in the NICU and improvement of their care.

Our world-renowned researchers are constantly working on new ideas to improve neonatal care.  Some areas of research in the BWH NICU are lung disease, neonatal neurology, and infant development.   Many of the therapies in use now were developed through past research.  During your baby's stay in the NICU, you and your baby may be eligible to participate in one or more research studies.  You may be approached by a researcher for your consent to participate with your baby in a project.  Taking part in a research project is always completely voluntary.  All studies taking place in the NICU have the approval of the Partners Human Research Committee and meet the highest standards of scientific and clinical excellence.  You may always ask questions of the research staff or your baby’s care providers.  If you have any questions or concerns about research in the NICU you can contact Marianne Moore at (617) 732-8214.  If you have questions about research that have not been answered to your satisfaction, you might find it helpful to contact the Executive Secretary of the Human Research Committee at (617) 732-5740.
