The Ambulatory Service of the Department of Radiology is located on the first floor of the Ambulatory Services building at 45 Francis Street. The service provides outpatient general radiography services which are of high quality and at the convenience of the patient. For most exams, no appointment is necessary and patients can walk in with their doctor's orders and obtain high quality efficient radiography services. As is the policy of Brigham and Women's Department of Radiology, no exam can be performed without a physician's written request. Brigham and Women's offers Valet Service parking for all its patients as well as regular parking.

Specific Services Available

  • Six general radiography rooms equipped with state-of-the-art computer radiography units in each room and one fluoroscopic room are designed exclusively to provide general outpatient radiographic services from 7:30 am - 6:00 pm, Monday - Friday. Located on the first floor of the Ambulatory Services Building.
  • Radiologists expert in musculoskeletal radiology provide a comprehensive service in bone radiology and state-of-the-art MRI and CT musculoskeletal interpretation.
  • Radiologists provide on-line consultation services to physicians for MRI, CT, and general bone radiography, all located in one radiology reading area in the Ambulatory Division.
  • Expert arthrography services are available on a scheduled basis, usually within a few days. Flexibility in scheduling an exam is always possible. See Scheduling in Radiology, below, for more information.
  • A two-room emergency suite for plain radiography is dedicated to Emergency Department patients and equipped with computer radiography and digital radiography equipment. Ultrasound and CT rooms also located within the emergency suite provide complete radiographic services within the Emergency Department.
  • Staff radiologists provide interpretive coverage every day 7:00 am - 11:00 pm. Radiology resident and technical coverage is available 24 hours/day.

Radiology Requisitions

At arrival time, the patient will need to go to Hospital Registration to obtain a Blue Registration card. Registration areas are located on the first and second floor of the Ambulatory Services Building.

In order to provide optimal interpretations of radiologic studies, radiologists must receive correct and pertinent clinical information. Radiology requisitions have two spaces, one for "history, findings, diagnosis" (why the patient is in the hospital or clinic) and another for "questions to be answered" (symptom or problem to be resolved).

Radiology requisitions will be provided to physician offices upon request. All requisitions should be legible, completely filled out, signed, and contain the indication for the procedure requested. In the absence of a requisition, a physician's prescription filled out with the exam requested and appropriate clinical indications will suffice.

As is the policy of Brigham and Women's Department of Radiology, no exam can be performed without a physician's written request.

Scheduling in Radiology

All general radiography examinations are done on a walk-in basis with a physician's written order. The Ambulatory Radiology Clinic is open 7:30 am - 6:00 pm, Monday - Friday.

Arthrograms and other interventional bone studies are booked in the scheduling office - 617-732-6248. The office is open weekdays 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. Emergency arthrograms will be accommodated upon approval by one of our Division's musculoskeletal radiologists.

Information needed from the physician to schedule an exam:

  1. Patient's name, date of birth, Brigham medical number
  2. Physician's name, address, telephone number
  3. Reason for requesting examination
  4. Relevant patient history

Radiology Image Cervice Center

For patients, physicians, lawyers, researchers and insurers needing to obtain a copy of imaging studies, compact disks (CDs) are provided at no charge. If film is absolutely necessary there will be an $8.00 per sheet charge. All CDs and film are managed and kept secure, consistent with hospital policies related to confidentiality, access and release of medical records and information.

Each requester must fill out the necessary request and authorization forms. The Image Service Representative will help facilitate your need and provide the necessary request and authorization forms. Call the Image Service Center at 617-732-7180 for more information. The center is open 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, Monday - Friday.

Patient Convenience

In addition to flexible service, Brigham and Women's Hospital provides Valet Parking for all its patients at a nominal fee. Patients can drive up to our main entrance and have an attendant park their car when they arrive for appointments at the hospital. If patients prefer, Brigham and Women's Hospital is also accessible by MBTA buses and Green Line trolley service.

Ambulatory Radiology is located in the Ambulatory Services building on the first level. For your convenience, use the Atrium Entrance at 45 Francis Street. As you enter, turn left and take the Ambulatory II Elevators down to Level 1. Turn right as you exit the elevator, then right again. The Ambulatory Division is marked "Radiology" and is located about halfway down the hall on your right.
