Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) is recognized as a world leader in osteoarthritis diagnosis and treatment, providing innovative and expert care to thousands of patients every year. From its origins as the Robert Breck Brigham Hospital, the first teaching hospital in this country wholly devoted to treatment of arthritis-related diseases, BWH has become a focus for pioneering research, innovative therapeutics and world-class care for patients suffering with osteoarthritis.
Currently, more than 27 million people in the U.S. are affected by osteoarthritis. To help address this significant health care issue, BWH recently launched a multidisciplinary clinical, educational and research effort dedicated to osteoarthritis.
The Osteoarthritis Center, directed by the Division of Rheumatology’s Antonios Aliprantis, MD, PhD, cultivates a collaborative relationship among clinicians and researchers from numerous disciplines, including rheumatology, orthopedics, physical therapy, pain management and bone and joint radiology. The clinical effort aims to optimize the diagnosis and medical and surgical care of patients with osteoarthritis, while research focuses on approaches to understanding mechanisms of joint degeneration and new pathways to joint preservation.
