The Cardiovascular Division provides the full spectrum of ambulatory and hospital-based care.

Ambulatory Services

Watkins Clinic, which is the ambulatory suite for the Cardiovascular Center, is located on the main floor of the Shapiro Cardiovascular Center, accessed at 75 Francis Street. Conveniently situated on the main BWH campus, the suite affords easy access to our facilities for exercise testing, echo-cardiography, radiology, CT, MRI, and radionuclide imaging. Cardiovascular specialists are available to see and evaluate new patients within one week of elective referral and within 24 hours for urgent requests. Our specialists work closely with the referring physician to develop a plan for further evaluation and treatment that is best suited to the patient. Physicians, advanced practice nurses, and physician assistants with dedicated expertise in specialized cardiovascular disorders (heart failure, cardiomyopathy, arrhythmia, intra-cardiac devices, valve disease, coronary and peripheral arterial disease, venous thrombo-embolic disease, lipid and metabolic disorders, cardiovascular genetic disorders) work collaboratively in small groups to provide superior care. Cardiac or vascular surgical consultation is available as indicated at the time of the initial visit. BWH cardiovascular physicians also see patients at our Faulkner campus ambulatory offices in Jamaica Plain.

Appointments and referrals for ambulatory care can be scheduled by calling

  • at Brigham and Women's Hospital - 857-307-4000
  • at Faulkner Hospital - 617-983-7420

Inpatient Care

Care of the hospitalized patient with advanced or unstable heart disease is provided in specialized nursing units within the BWH tower. Intensive care and telemetry units are equipped with state-of-the-art monitoring and computer order-entry systems to enable physicians and nurses to provide optimal care.

There are many inpatient services dedicated to highly specialized care.  These include acute coronary intensive care, advanced heart failure, heart transplantation and ventricular assist devices, invasive electrophysiologic testing, arrhythmia ablation, device implantation, diagnostic and, interventional cardiac and peripheral arterial catheterization, and general clinical cardiology.  Each inpatient service is staffed by a senior attending cardiovascular specialist who is  available 24/7 for consultation or patient transfer. Care is provided collaboratively with our superb nursing staff and with our cardiac and vascular surgical colleagues.

The Brigham Cardiovascular Consultants  staff one of the clinical cardiovascular in-patient services.  Additional senior staff are available for consultations throughout the hospital.

Care is provided in:

  • acute coronary syndromes including myocardial infarction and unstable angina
  • decompensated heart failure (including ventricular assist devices and transplantation)
  • complex arrhythmia and device management (pacemakers, defibrillators, ablations)
  • complex valvular heart disease
  • peripheral arterial disease
  • venous thrombo-embolic disease

An advanced practice nurse and trained admitting personnel are available 24/7 to arrange hospital transfer.  Hospital care is coordinated through the personal services of an attending physician. To arrange transfer, call our

  • Access Coordinator: 857-307-2749

More information regarding specific patient services is provided in the individual subspecialty sections of this site.
